nyfw fall '12 beauty ~ NARS

new york fashion week wrapped up a few days ago and the NARS team definitely made a fabulous impact! inspired by the visions of designers they worked with, using current and yet-to-be-released products {yay for new beauty goodies!}, i thought you'd enjoy some of the highlights...take a look!

at Honor, NARS director of artistry, James Boehmer created pretty, beautiful skin {NARS Sheer Glow foundation used} that was "luminous and glossy" with eyes that were "deliberate and sculpted in a chalky grey shade." to compliment the collection, described as a "love story between a preppy boy and exotic, argentinean girl." Honor designer Giovanna Randall says, "it's the merging of two worlds ~ very refined and earthy with tapestry prints and a modern take on art deco."

at Fabiola Arias, the collection was full of strong pieces. NARS international lead makeup artist, Uzo, created rich, illuminated ombre eyes; warm shades, complemented by gold tones on the inner corners of the eyes, created an illuminated look. Key Largo, Kuala Lumpur, and Kilamanjaro duo eyeshadows {along with new Vent Glacé Duo Eyeshadow, available fall 2012} were key. designer Fabiola Arias wanted the models to look "really lit from within, in gorgeous dresses and hats that my mother, a milliner, created."

Thakoon wanted to focus on the lips for the fall/winter season, so NARS makeup artist Diane Kendal used fuchsia pink, a less obvious shade when one thinks of a bold lip. "the collection is a romantic cliche of something old new york...upper east side in the '80s, but with a quirky twist", said the designer. "it's reminiscent of the past but still feels modern." Kendal says of the shade choice, Heat Wave: "we wanted to play with color, and it ends up making the whole look so interesting."

the 3.1 Phillip Lim collection explored duality, "creating illusions of form by exploring the idea of shadow mapping and paneling, using positive and negative space to evoke the notion of a neo-noir heroine with a strength that belies her innate vulnerability." brand ambassador, Francelle Daly, gave models a look that was "part cartoon, but emotional, edgy, ethereal, and on the brink of tears. think, 'comic book super hero' meets 'emotional Roy Lichtenstein' character." key products included Carpates Stylo Eyeliner, Outlaw blush and Undress Me Multiple {all new for fall 2012}

Naeem Kahn's collection was inspired by italian actress Monica Vitti. "i wanted to do a collection that referenced italy in the 1960s...a beautiful time", says the designer. James Boehmer created a precise, sharp line on the eyes to bring this inspiration to life on the face. "everything else has that 'barely there' feeling. the eye line has to be really sharp and pointed up towards the temple - it's not a cat eye, and it's not a wide eye. it draws the eyes up." key products included Larger Than Life Mascara and Carpates Eyeliner Stylo.

so many fabulous trends to love and products to look forward to, wouldn't you say? stay tuned as i bring you more beauty and style highlights from ny fashion week!

nail color of the week: Nars Bad Influence

this week's mani was actually from last week, but in the hustle of the holiday week, my kids off from school {not to mention i was under the weather...}, blah, blah, blah....i completely forgot to share! thankfully, i did take pics, so i'm doing it now {*smile}.

as you may have already guessed, i dressed my nails in Bad Influence by Nars, a shade that made its debut around this time last year. i bought it just recently via Sephora's f&f {20% off sale and this beauty was also half price {woo-hoo!}!.

Bad Influence is a gorgeous smoky brown taupe, deep enough to make an impact, but still neutral for days you want to play it safe. :)

just to jazz it up a bit, i gave my mani a little accent with Butter London Wallis.

oh, btw, this week i'm rockin' a fun shade called Zoe by Julep {stay tuned~ a post about the brand along with pics of 2 gorgeous shades is coming later this week}.

so tell me, what are you wearing on your tips this week??

Anne Hathaway at the NYC Premiere of Love and Other Drugs

for the nyc premiere of the new film, Love and Other Drugs, celebrity makeup artist Kate Lee created a makeup look for Anne Hathaway that was "beautiful but approachable" to compliment her winter white gown.

Chanel Vitalumiere Fluid Makeup applied over Hydramax + Active Serum (also Chanel) gave Anne's skin a pretty, dewy finish. her fabulous eye look was created using a mixture of silvery and pale gold creme shadow from the Nars Thebes Duo Cream Shadow Palette as well as Chanel Eclat Lumiere in Beige Rose to lift the brow bone. Kate lined Anne's eyes close to the lashline, softly smudged it, then added feathery strip lashes before applying mascara.

to complete the look, Chanel Ultra Wear Lip Colour in Cristal Rose (new for spring '11, available in january) was used on Anne's lips. Kate says, "i love this color as it is transparent enough to see your own lip colour behind it, but will not be moved! it also has a transparent gloss which you can use to add moisture throughout the evening.”

NARS Vintage Nail Polish Collection

happy friday (and october), beauties! look what just became available today-- the NARS Vintage Nail Polish Collection! five delicious shades, resurrected by popular demand, all with NARS' signature longwearing formula.

these polishes have a high gloss luster, are water and detergent resistant, and will only be around for a brief time. don't miss your chance to own these past best-sellers (if you don't already), all with classic cinema as their common theme (original launch for each shade in the parenthesis)...

Mash ('96), is an army green infused with gold. don't remember the movie? it was the comedy about the staff of a korean war field hospital using humor to keep their sanity in the face of war. the film inspired the hit tv series M*A*S*H.

King Kong, also from '96, is a copper brown infused with gold. who hasn't seen the classic about the infamous giant ape who becomes smitten with beauty?

Midnight Express ('96) is a deep navy. the 1970s film was about an inmate's opportunity to escape from prison.

Zulu ('96) is a gorgeous forest green. the 1964 british war movie starred Stanley Baker and Michael Caine.

Full Metal Jacket ('98-- a great year, if i do say so myself) is a gunmetal grey. the epic vietnam war movie was directed by Stanley Kubrick in 1987.

since fall is the seasonal height of the fashion year, these Vintage Nail Polishes are a must-have (and you know your nails would love a new shade to wear). as i told you earlier, these are available to purchase now. just visit narscosmetics.com.

happy shopping!

NY Fashion Week: Backstage Beauty at Thakoon Spring 2011

Thakoon's spring 2011 collection was inspired by nature, romance and rock 'n roll, so hair and makeup were created along the same lines, but with a beachy-cool twist.

"the clothes are light so i wanted the makeup to have a little more impact this time-- as if the girls were beautiful, cool fairies," said Thakoon. "i wanted the whole aura to feel like opening windows and letting in a breeze- fresh and romantic but tempered at the same time."

lead makeup artist for NARS, Diane Kendal (pictured above) described the makeup look as being "golden, but not tanned. as if the girls are glowing from within...with, of course, confidence."

to create each model's look, products by NARS were used: skin was prepped with Mattifying Primer and Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer (available spring 2011). eyelids were lined with Hollywoodland Shadow Pencil (available spring 2011) and contoured with Calanque Trio Eyeshadow (available spring 2011) using the darker shade in the outer corners. cheeks were given their glow by using Zen Blush with Laguna Bronzing Powder just on the apples highlighted with Etrusque Single Eyeshadow (new for holiday 2010). the look was finished by ling lips with Hopi Velvet Gloss Lip Pencil and applying Pure Matte Lipstick in Madere (both available spring 2011).

the hair at the show was created using all products by Frédéric Fekkai:

to create the look, dry hair was prepped by applying Full Blown Volume Styling Whip, combing it back away from the face with fingers. it was then spritzed with Coiff Oceanique Tousled Wave Spray from the middle to ends of the hair and finished by teasing the back of the hair, keeping it light and creating easy, beachy waves.

NY Fashion Week Spring 2011: NARS Creates Makeup Look at Honor

at the Honor fashion show for spring/summer 2011, NARS international lead makeup artist, James Boehmer, led a team of makeup artists to create a look that accentuated eyes and kept lips nude.

up-and-coming Honor designer Giovanna Randall shared that the inspiration for the look came from an "elegant femininity inspired by Catherine Deneuve and Grace Kelly with an edge of rebellion like Cyndi Lauper."

with the venue set up like a parisian apartment, the idea was to communicate a merge of innocent femininity and bold sexuality.

for the look James and his team created round-shaped eye combined with a nude matte lip and an overall blended effect. he says, "we wanted the look to be clean and simple so not to distract from the clothes."

to keep the face soft, features were kept streamlined by not using mascara. below are some key products and steps for recreating the look (all products by NARS):

-Pure Radiant Tinted Moisturizer (new for february 2011). For now – try a light application of Sheer Glow Foundation
-Zen Blush
-Bombshell Eyeshadow (to highlight cheekbones)
-Alhambra Duo Eyeshadow
-Ashes To Ashes Eyeshadow
-Madere Pure Matte Lipstick (new for spring 2011) dabbed on the lip (try Bangkok Pure Matte Lipstick for now)

Keri Russell at the Primetime Emmy Awards

pretty in pink, Keri Russell (i miss Felicity, don't you?) attended the 62nd Annual Primetime Emmys looking fresh and laid-back, but still very elegant.

Tina Turnbow created the makeup look for the star of the upcoming comedy series, Running Wilde, using NARS new Pure Matte Lipstick as the key product, as well as many products from the Fall 2010 Collection.

"we wanted to give her look a classic feel to coincide with the vintage dress she's wearing. her warm skin tone and the coolness of the dress was the perfect combination for reflecting the same tones through her makeup: warm eyes, and a cool peachy matte lip. it's flirty with a bit of sass." ~Tina Turnbow for NARS Cosmetics

the following products were used to create Keri's vintage-inspired look:

PRO-PRIME Smudge Proof Eyeshadow Base and Skin Smoothing Face Prep
Tzarine Duo Eyeshadow (new for fall 2010)
Nuits Blanches Eyeliner Stylo
Douceur Blush (new for fall 2010) topped with Desire Blush for a pop of color
Tashkent Pure Matte Lipstick (new for fall 2010**)

Leighton Meester at the 2010 Teen Choice Awards

when Leighton Meester attended the 2010 Teen Choice Awards, she too had a pretty makeup look, created by none other than CoverGirl's celeb makeup artist Molly R. Stern.

Molly shares what products, and how she used them, to create this soft, feminine look...

for her face:

"i prepped Leighton's skin with Josie Marin Argan Oil Skin Primer and lightly moisturized with Sk-11 Facial Lift Emulsion. next, i sparingly used CoverGirl Clean Liquid Makeup.

for her eyes:

"we wanted a celestial glow with a smidge of an edge. so i first based her eye with NARS Cream Chadow in Corfu on the lid, then with Shu Uemura P Gold 94 over the top. i added a little silver sparkly glittery shadow from RMK, a treasure i found in japan, to the inside of the lid and under the outer edge of the eye. next, i lined the top of the lid at the lash line and under the eye with CoverGirl LiquiLineBlast Eyeliner in Blue Boom. for her lashes, 2 coats of CoverGirl LashBlast Fusion in Brown was the perfect finish."

on her cheeks:

"i used Kevin Aucoin Creamy Moist Glow in Nuelle and dusted YSL Touché Blush over the top. to set her look for the red carpet i dusted all over with La Mer Treatment Powder Foundation in Linen.

on her lips:

"i wanted a long lasting nude so i chose CoverGirl Oulast Lipstain in Nude Kiss on the lip with CoverGirl ShineBlast Lipgloss in Dazzle over top."

thanks Molly-- fabulous work!

NARS Summer 2010 Collection

created and photographed by Nars founder and creative director Francois Nars, the NARS Summer 2010 campaign was inspired by Catherine Deneuve's character Severine in the movie Belle de Jour. as with the Spring 2010 collection, Amber Valletta is the face of the collection.

i personally am loving the glamour of this collection even though it's for summer. take a look...

Enchanted
a soft-peach cream blush with a hint of shimmer; leaves skin luminous with smooth and silky color. the vitamin-enriched formula is long-lasting and blends easily for a sheer flush and healthy, glowing summertime skin.

Burn It Blue
an iridescent ocean-blue and turquoise duo cream eyeshadow. the soft cream formula can be applied with fingertips or a brush for more precision. swipe on alone or layer one on the other-- the final look is delicate, yet striking.

Cayenne
spicy, deep brown cream eyeshadow; the weightless texture makes it a versatile summer option. use it to line eyes or swipe it across the entire lid. can be applied sheer or layered for more color, intensity and pop.

Love Devotion
sheer guava lipstick delivers a subtle and glistening color, and lips are left looking soft and sumptuously in season.

Coup de Coeur
like the french phrase it's named after, this apple-brandy tinted lip gloss is shiny and sheer. convenient wand application is perfect for adding gloss throughout the day for ultra-tempting fullness.

Lamu
a fresh, glazed-apricot shade with gold sparkles to create shimmering accents. gives a glowing complexion, is lightweight, foolproof, quick and easy.

Versailles
a regal, opalescent, champagne-gold nail hue with shimmer that creates a sophisticated, light-catching tint.

Get Glowing with NARS Orgasm Illuminator

NARS Orgasm Illuminator is the latest in the family of Orgasm-colored products and probably my most favorite.

if you don't already know, in the world of beauty NARS Orgasm Blush is a "must-have", "perfect for all skintones" blush. sadly, this isn't quite true. i myself am not a fan of the blush on its own, but find it to be a much better highlighting shade on my darker complexion.

stars like Molly Sims, Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez and Zoe Saldana have been wearing NARS Illuminator to various events this year.

the Illuminator, thankfully, is much more flattering. as described by the brand, it's a sheer wash of gold, peach and pink fluid. i like to refer to the finish as being more of a pretty sheen than a shimmer. it's uber-wearable and perfect for the upcoming season. it's versatile enough to be worn on bare skin or with makeup. as a highlighter over blush, it creates a gorgeous finish-- it makes cheekbones really pop!-- and can also be blended with foundation to give skin a little extra something. it's also great applied on your decolletage or shoulders.

me wearing NARS Illuminator :)

a word of caution when you use this-- begin with a tiny bit and build to get the effect you need. and note that the finish is sheer and will not reflect the same indoors as it does out. :)

find NARS Orgasm Illuminator at your local NARS beauty counter, at Sephora and online at narscosmetics.com

Diane Kendal applying makeup to model

lead Nars artist, Diane Kendal says of the look: "the look is fresh, beautiful, luminous and quite confident. we focused on a strong brow and highlighted the eyes to show depth and boldness in a way that wouldn't fight with the various textures, layers and colors of the collection."

on the face: Douceur Blush (new for fall 2010); try Lovejoy or Madly Blush for a similar effect
on the eyes: Coconut Grove Single Eyeshadow (new for fall 2010); try Bali Single Eyeshadow for a similar effect. Tzarine Duo Eyeshadow (new for fall 2010); try the Orgasm Illuminator on brow bones for a similar effect. Portobello Duo Eyeshadow
